Have you ever had that uncomfortable realisation that your “original” thoughts might not be so original after all? In this contemplative exploration, I share my existential moment when someone commented that my content was similar to another creator’s work. It triggered a question that many of us face but rarely discuss openly: If everything I think has already been thought before, what’s the point of sharing my perspective at all?
This video connects to my previous exploration of free will (or lack thereof), where I described how we’re essentially pinballs in a cosmic machine, bouncing according to physics and prior conditions. Today, I take that concept further by examining what it means for our sense of identity and purpose when we realise our thoughts aren’t exclusively our own.
While sitting beside this beautiful stream, I came to a surprisingly comforting conclusion. Though our thoughts may not be unique, the conclusions we draw from them -filtered through our individual experiences and perspectives- create something uniquely ours. We become expressions of the universe, each with our own distinct channel.
There’s something profoundly liberating about realising you’re not as important as you thought you were. It doesn’t diminish your value; rather, it contextualises you within the grand tapestry of existence. This perspective helps neutralise the ego, allowing you to struggle less against “the system” and instead engage with it in a more resonant, harmonious way.
When you understand your symbiotic relationship with all things, you can pursue not just fleeting happiness but deeper well-being, serenity, and understanding. You can give your fellow humans a break, knowing we’re all expressions of this same complex process. The result? A more serene existence, more beauty, more gratitude, less egotism, and greater centeredness.
Looking back at life’s path often makes perfect sense in retrospect, even if the way forward wasn’t clear at the time. We’re constantly making choices that feel like decisions but might be inevitable, given who we are and what we’ve experienced. And there’s beauty in that rhapsody-we each play our unique part.
So, if you’re questioning your purpose, looking to find meaning in life or the value of your contributions to the world, this video might help you find comfort in the paradox: your thoughts aren’t uniquely yours, and that’s precisely what makes your expression of them valuable.
Join me for this stream-side philosophical journey that might just change how you view your place in the universe. Sometimes, the most freeing realisation is that you’re not as special as you thought-and that makes you all the more magnificent as an expression of existence itself. I love existential questions 🙂
